Week 18 Dec. 18-21

Team Urban,

This last week was a busy week with Grandparent's Day, the Christmas Performance in the evening, and the class market. It is always a joy to meet the grandparents of the great students in our class.

I know the Christmas break is a time for relaxing and being with family.  Just remember to make sure that students have a book they are reading over this time to help ensure they make their AR goal for the 2nd trimester.  When we get back from break, before you know it, the AR deadline will be upon us.

Here are a few pics from last week:

Parents, thank you for all of your book orders throughout the year.  Here are our recent additions to the classroom library.  Students really enjoy the I Survived series and the Who Was or Who Is series.

Leader of the Week: LUKE TOOKER

Week 16 Dec. 4-8

Team Urban,

Our kindness elf, named Pablo, arrived from the North Pole this week! He brought a lot of excitement to our class on Friday and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for the kiddos in the coming weeks.

On Friday, I sent home the November Assessment Log and their math and ELA IAB results. Please sign the assessment log and return it as soon as possible. You do not have to return the IAB results. Remember, the IAB results will not appear on report cards however, they are an indicator of where your child stands right now within those standards on similar questions on state testing. Please know that all IAB material assessed will continue to be taught until state testing in May.

Grandparent’s Day and the Winter Program are right around the corner. We will be performing Frosty the Snowman and Happy Holidays. Mrs. Solano, our Spanish teacher, has also organized a Spanish performance of El Burrito Sabanero. Week 12 Oct. 30-Nov. 3

Team Urban,

It is hard to believe that November is upon us! Speaking of November, please remember that November 2nd is the end of the first trimester and AR deadline. Most of our Oct. monthly assessment logs went home this week.  Some did not, so they will go home on Monday.

I appreciate all of you who have already signed up for conferences and finding a time slot convenient for you. I have spots available on Monday, November 13 and after school on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 14-15. I am not available Thursdays or Fridays after school.

As report card season is upon us, please keep in mind that ILCS assesses on end of the year mastery. This means that we are working towards mastery by the end of third grade. Many kiddos will not meet end of the year mastery in the first trimester and could very well be a 2 in areas, as they work towards that end of year mastery of a 3. Keep in mind when looking at assessment logs, the % score is composed of several standards assessed in that test to come up with a total score. For example, a Reading Test score of 80% is made up of several reading/writing standards.  Within those standards being assessed, there can be a standard or so that a student is not showing mastery even though an 80% is achieved.

I will be out of the class again on Thursday for an all day training on campus.

Week 9 Oct. 9-13

Greetings Team Urban,

Update on Hope for Houston:

We were notified from our original pairing with the 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Rivera that she had not sustained any damage to her classroom.  We were then reassigned and partnered with Mrs. Latham, a 4th grade class at Bastian Elementary. In this class, 6 families lost their homes, and 1 child's father passed away.  I am happy to announce that we are sending off a cashiers check of $91.76 plus two Amazon gift cards for $45.  Mrs. Latham is overjoyed by our willingness to help out these families in any way possible.
We would  also love to continue communication with Team Latham via letters or Skype.  As soon as I hear back from Mrs. Latham, she will let us know of any specific needs she may have for these families for future collections.

Week 7 Sept. 25-29

Team Urban,

Hard work and working hard was the theme this week.  Students learned how to annotate in NewsELA, which is an online news source for kids.  They read an article and highlighted key details or words to show their thinking.  They then took a short quiz on the article.

Students also tackled a new property of multiplication; the distributive property.  This is a way to break apart a multiplication equation into two multiplication equations to help them solve the problem.  Here are a few pictures of them working together with manipulatives on day 1.

Leadership lessons have been focusing on RESPECT.  We set a class goal based on data to see if we can improve overall respect in our classroom.  Below is our class goal and how we plan to achieve this goal.

This week:

Homework:  -Fact Practice due daily
-20 min each day of reading (4 entries in reading log)
                     -Google Classroom

  • This week google classroom will have a twist to it.  Attached in google classroom students will see an article they need to read.  After reading they will click on CREATE and then GOOGLE DOC to type in their response.  Their response should be following the RACE to respond guidelines below that we have been working on in class.

ELA:
-Begin reading About Earth
-Main idea in a nonfiction text
-Text features
-Spelling: V/CV, VC/V
-Writing: expository

MATH:

Hello Team Urban,

WE WON AGAIN!  2 weeks in a row for the most spirited classroom on Friday!  A HUGE thanks to Joshua Barre for being proactive and bringing in extra shirts for others!! GOOOO Team Urban!

Read-aloud time from the book Wonder has quickly become our favorite time of the day. Students are learning about how our body language and looks can easily be a way to send positive and negative messages to someone without even saying a word. Remember, if you would like your child to obtain a copy of this book from our library to read on their own, please send in a note of permission for them to do so.

Our Hope for Houston project continues to be a success. We will still be collecting donations, for the next two weeks, until 8/29.

Book Orders:  I am still accepting orders until 8/29.  We are working towards our goal of 10,000 bonus points.  If you already are buying books, try purchasing from Scholastic.com and help put more books in our classroom. Use group code: GRPY6
