Students just completed their first Math Test for Topic 1. They earned some extra recess this afternoon.  I am proud of the growth they have made in multiplication and division. 

Homework: Each week, your child should read for at least 80 minutes (20 minutes each night) and record the time in their reading log.  The other nightly homework is math fact practice.

There are now 2 Reading quiz scores in Savvas and 1 Math Topic test for you to review with your child. Go to ILCS Links (link on the right) and have your child log into Savvas and review any missed questions they have.

AR: As of today, students should be at 60% of their AR goal or higher. Several students have already met their goal and challenged themselves to set a higher goal. Several students are in danger of not meeting their goal in 4 weeks.  Please make sure they are reading AR books at home and coming into class ready to take the AR quiz.

Assessment Logs for September went home today. Please sign and return.  What do these scores mean? A score of 70% is considered mastery according to the Pearson program.  However, an assessment score of 70% is made up of several reading, writing, and math standards to get that score. Within those standards being assessed on each assessment, there can be a standard or more that a student is not showing mastery yet, even though a 70% was achieved.

This second full week of school students really stretched their brains by learning new things such as commutative property and division, restating a question with an answer, and taking our first spelling and reading test.
Learning new things can sometimes create challenges. Challenges we may have never had before. As we have been applying our monthly habit of growth mindset in class, students may exhibit a fixed mindset at home. Try to reinforce at home that mistakes and challenges help us to grow and learn. This week students finished up learning about Honeybees and Their Hive.  They enjoyed listening to books and videos and exploring a hive through the link Math and Science Gizmos at the right. Students can show you all their knowledge about the honeybee and its "Waggle Dance".

To further their understanding, Mr. Stamper volunteered his time to come to speak to all 3rd-grade classes on Monday about his hobby of beekeeping.  Students were able to observe his beekeeping tools and ask questions about all things beekeeping.

Assessment Logs went home on Friday.  Please sign and return to class on Monday.

Today (Friday), an assessment log went home with each student. Please take a moment to log into Pearson or AR, look over the scores, discuss areas of challenge and areas of success, sign the log and return it on Tuesday. In third grade, students take a beginning of the year Baseline test for ELA and placement test for Math.  Those scores show a low percentage because they are a reflection of what they still have to learn for the remainder of 3rd grade.  Students will reassess of the benchmarks at the end of the year to evaluate their learning growth. Please sign and return the Assessment Log on Tuesday with your child.  

Homework Each week your child should be reading for a total of at least 80 minutes.  The other nightly homework will be math fact practice. Please be on the lookout for a half sheet of paper coming home each night starting on Sept. 13th.
