Our Safari Park Field Trip is coming up quickly! Please take a few minutes to read this entire post, as there is some important information regarding transportation and chaperones.

Transportation Information

Our goal is to have ONE bus for our field trip. Bus costs are extremely high, so we are trying our best to keep the cost down by taking only one bus.

A half-sheet of paper will be attached to your child’s permission slip today. Please indicate whether your child will:

• Ride the bus to and from the Safari Park, OR

• Be driven to and from the Safari Park by their parent/guardian

This information is very important and will help us determine whether one bus will be sufficient for our trip.

If you do not purchase a chaperone ticket but would still like to drive your child to the Safari Park (for example, if you would like to bring younger or older siblings), you are welcome to drive your child.

Chaperone Information

If you are interested in being a chaperone for our Safari Park Field Trip, please read all of the following information before purchasing a ticket:

• Chaperone tickets are $20. By purchasing a chaperone ticket, you are committing to supervising a small group of students throughout the field trip.

• At this time, each family may purchase ONE chaperone ticket. As we get closer to the trip, additional tickets may become available if space allows.

• ALL CHAPERONES MUST DRIVE THEMSELVES AND THEIR OWN CHILD. Only teachers and students will be riding the bus.

• For safety reasons, chaperones may not drive other students unless the student’s parent/guardian is in the same vehicle or the chaperone is listed on that student’s emergency release card.

• If you purchase a chaperone ticket, we ask that younger or older siblings not attend. This allows chaperones to give their full attention to the students they are responsible for.

Chaperone Ticket: If you secure a chaperone ticket below, please turn in $20 CASH to your child’s teacher by Friday, September 18th. If your payment is not received by then, we will open your spot to another parent.

Students finished up a chapter book called The Case of the Gasping Garbage.  In honor of the storyline about science detective work, we conducted a fun experiment today called "Who wrote the letter?" They were able to see the different variations in the same color ink pens and how to determine which pen was the "secret writer".

Also, students completed Topic 1 and started a fun Math Project that they will be able to share in class on Tuesday.

Our class had a fun time exploring maps from a "bird's-eye view" by using Google Earth.  From there, they made their own map of the class, school, or their own home on their weekly Social Studies newspaper. 

This week, students will take their first Topic math test and another reading test.

Homework: Each week, your child should read for at least 80 minutes (20 minutes each night) and record the time in their reading log.  The other nightly homework is math fact practice.

We are halfway through the first trimester of 3rd grade! Today I sent home a half-sheet of your child's progress towards their AR goal for the trimester. Please sign it and return it to school on Monday.

Additionally, if you have signed up to chaperone the upcoming Field Trip to the Safari Park, please send in the money to class so we can begin collecting funds ahead of time. Also, make sure your child has a blue ILCS shirt to wear on the day of the field trip.

Students just completed their first Math Test for Topic 1. They earned some extra recess this afternoon.  I am proud of the growth they have made in multiplication and division. 

Homework: Each week, your child should read for at least 80 minutes (20 minutes each night) and record the time in their reading log.  The other nightly homework is math fact practice.

We had fun finishing up our thunder and lightning unit with actual thunder and lightning today, and a fun science demonstration to resemble clouds rain, and lightning. As you can see from the pictures below, they also had fun touching it because of shaving cream!

There are now 2 Reading quiz scores in Savvas and 1 Math Topic test for you to review with your child. Go to ILCS Links (link on the right) and have your child log into Savvas and review any missed questions they have.

AR: As of today, students should be at 60% of their AR goal or higher. Several students have already met their goal and challenged themselves to set a higher goal. Several students are in danger of not meeting their goal in 4 weeks.  Please make sure they are reading AR books at home and coming into class ready to take the AR quiz.

Assessment Logs for September went home today. Please sign and return.  What do these scores mean? A score of 70% is considered mastery according to the Pearson program.  However, an assessment score of 70% is made up of several reading, writing, and math standards to get that score. Within those standards being assessed on each assessment, there can be a standard or more that a student is not showing mastery yet, even though a 70% was achieved.
