Week 18 Dec. 17-20

Team Urban,

This last week was a busy week with Grandparent's Day and the evening Winter Performance. It is always a joy to meet the grandparents of the great students in our class.

I know the break is a time for relaxing and being with family.  Just remember to make sure that your student has a few books they are reading over this time to help ensure they make their AR goal for the 2nd trimester.  When we get back from break, before you know it, the AR deadline will be upon us.

Bob our Kindness Elf has been hanging around to help us spread kindness this season.  Each day Bob has a note for the class to carry out an act of kindness.  So far, students have written letters of kindness to family, friends, staff members, our principal, and to the seniors in our community.

If I do not have the opportunity to see you this week, please know that I wish you, and your family, a blessed and joyous Christmas break!

Week 16 Dec. 3-7

Team Urban,

On Friday, I sent home the November Assessment Log and their math and ELA IAB results. Please sign the assessment log and return it as soon as possible. You do not have to return the IAB results. Remember, the IAB results will not appear on report cards however, they are an indicator of where your child stands right now within those standards on similar questions on state testing. Please know that all IAB material assessed will continue to be taught until state testing in May. If you have any questions regarding these IAB assessments, please feel free to email me.

Grandparent’s Day and the Winter Program are right around the corner. We will be performing Frosty the Snowman and Happy Holidays on December 10th. Grandparents should be in the Lions' Den by 10:15 and we will be performing soon after.  Grandparents will then return to the classroom for a quick craft activity with the students. Week 14: Nov. 13-15

Team Urban,

I hope you have a relaxing extended weekend.  Monday there is no school, as well as Tuesday. On Tuesday, I will be meeting with several families to review student progress for the first trimester. Please keep in mind that our conference time slots are 20 min each. To be respectful to everyone, please be on time and understand there are scheduled meetings that follow your time slot.

Last week we had our Apex fun run.  You still have time to generate donations from the previous parent square email. So far, we have earned popsicles, PJ day, and a crazy hair day. Here are some pictures of the APEX Fun Run awards in class and pictures of awards at the 1st-trimester assembly. Thank you all for your support of our school. Students had a great time with Beastie Buddy as well coming into class each day and giving them a lesson on what it means to be APEX STRONG!

THIS WEEK:
To further drive our instructional needs towards mastery on end of year state testing, we will be completing the Interim Assessment Blocks (IAB) provided to us by the state for ELA and math this week. Please understand that these IAB's assessments are to drive instruction and will not be recorded on your child's report card. However, you will see their scores on the December assessment log. Since IAB's will be given this week we will not have spelling words/test along with no Google Classroom. Also, please pack extra snacks so your kiddo may snack during assessment time to refuel their brain. YAY!

Week 13 Nov. 5-9

Team Urban,

We had a super fun week with a field trip to the Safari Park, Apex Fun Run Assembly, and PJ Day with a Halloween celebration! Thank you to all the parents who helped chaperone our field trip and who sent in items or volunteered their time at our class party.  You all are the best! Thank you for all your support!

Here is a quick video below to recap the week!
Video of Week 12

As report card season is upon us, please keep in mind that ILCS assesses on end of the year mastery. This means that we are working towards mastery by the end of third grade. Many kiddos will not meet end of the year mastery in the first trimester and could very well be a 2 in areas, as they work towards that end of year mastery of a 3. Keep in mind when looking at assessment logs, the % score is composed of several standards assessed in that test to come up with a total score. For example, a Reading Test is made up of several reading, writing, or language standards.  Within those standards being assessed, there can be a standard or so that a student is not showing mastery even though an 80% is achieved.

A recent reading test pictured above shows five students and their final scores to the left. The fraction listed under each common core standard show the correct answers over the total number of problems of that standard in the test. As you can see, most have a standard they have yet to show mastery on in some standards.  This is just one snapshot of what I am looking at over multiple assessments for the trimester.

AR for the 2nd trimester begins on Monday.  Goals are set based on reading time each day and their most recent STAR reading test score.  I will go over new goals at parent conferences this month.

Week 12 Oct. 29th-Nov. 2nd

Team Urban,

It is hard to believe that November is almost upon us! Speaking of November, please remember that November 2nd is the end of the first trimester and AR deadline. October assessment logs will go home sometime this week.

I appreciate all of you who have already signed up for conferences and finding a time slot convenient for you.

Week 8 Oct. 1-5

Team Urban,

Assessment Logs for September went home today. Please sign and return.  What do these scores mean? A score of 70% is considered mastery according to the Pearson program.  However, an assessment score of 70% is made up of several reading, writing, and math standards to get that score. Within those standards being assessed on each assessment, there can be a standard or more that a student is not showing mastery yet, even though a 70% was achieved.

Attached to the Sept. Assessment Log is a recent report of your child's books they have read so far in this trimester.  At the end of the report, you will see a green highlighted number.  This is the grade level average (ATOS BL) your child is reading for their AR selection choices. Please be aware, in the 2nd trimester, their reading zones will be set in AR.  If they choose a book below their good fit zone, they will not be allowed to take the AR test unless I approve the test. Additionally, the end of the trimester is fast approaching.  Students should be at 60% or higher at this time for success in AR goals. There is approximately 1 month left for students to accomplish their AR goals.

Answers to some frequently asked questions are below:

-Can I drive my child to and from? -Yes, the more the merrier. We are actually encouraging you to do so for this field trip.
-Can I drive my child's friend?-Only if their parent is in the car as well.
-Can I just drive my child straight to the Safari Park without coming to school at 6:30am.?-No.  You and your child must check in with me at school and then sign them out into your custody at school.
-Can I go if I am not picked as a chaperone?- Yes, however, you will still need to pay at the group rate and your child must remain with their assigned group.
-Can siblings go?-As long as they are in your care and you are not an assigned chaperone.
-Can I bring a sibling if I am a chaperone?-No.
-Can I stay with my child at the Safari Park when the school leaves?-Yes, as long as you meet us at the time/place of departure to sign your child over to your supervision.
-Can I/husband be a chaperone?-Yes, as long as you/husband have your current Megan's Law clearance on file in the office.
-How do I let you know I want to chaperone?-Sign bottom of permission slip.
-How will I know if I am a chaperone?-I will notify you by person or email as soon as I have all the permission slips.
-Do I need to ride the bus if I am a chaperone?-No, but it is expected that you are there upon our arrival at Safari Park if you chose to drive yourself.

I think that covers almost all of the most frequently asked questions when attending a field trip.  If you have one I have not answered, please email me.
