December 16th-20th

Team Urban,

If I do not have the opportunity to see you this week, please know that I wish you, and your family, a blessed and joyous Christmas break!

This last week was a busy week with Grandparent's Day and the evening Winter Performance. It is always a joy to meet the grandparents of the great students in our class.

Christmas break is a time for relaxing and being with family.  Just remember to make sure that your student has a few books they are reading over this time to help ensure they make their AR goal for the 2nd trimester.  When we get back from break, before you know it, the AR deadline will be upon us. The deadline for trimester 2 is Feb. 21.

December 9th-13th

Team Urban,

Grandparent’s Day and the evening Winter Performance is Monday. We will be performing Frosty the Snowman and Happy Holidays on December 9th. Grandparents should be in the Lions' Den by 10:15 and we will be performing soon after.  Grandparents will then return to the classroom for a quick craft activity with the students until 11:00. That evening, there will be a quick performance at Active Church on Bryant St.  Students should go to the holding room at 5:30 and we perform at 5:45. Please be sure to pick up your child right after the performance outside of the church.
Additionally, we are requesting that your child wear a nice Christmas themed outfit for the evening performance. No Santa hats, please.

Dec. 20th Class Market information also went home today. It is right around the corner. Students will be using their class cash to purchase items from the other students in 3rd grade. It is also a chance to earn class cash for items they have made to sell. It is not mandatory, however, I encourage all kiddos to create items to sell. Anything Christmas themed would be great too. Be creative and have fun!

November 18th - 22nd

Team Urban,

I hope you have a relaxing extended weekend.  Monday there is no school due to parent conferences. I will be meeting with several families to review student progress for the first trimester. Please keep in mind that our conference time slots are 20 min each. To be respectful to everyone, please be on time and understand there are scheduled meetings that follow your time slot.

THIS WEEK:
To further drive our instructional needs towards mastery on end of year state testing, we will be completing the Interim Assessment Blocks (IAB) provided to us by the state for ELA and math this week. Please understand that these IAB's assessments are to drive instruction and will not be recorded on your child's report card. However, you will see their scores on the combined November/December assessment log. Since IAB's will be given this week we will not have spelling words/test along with no Google Classroom. Also, please pack extra snacks so your kiddo may snack during assessment time to refuel their brain. YAY!

November 4th-8th

Team Urban,

This week was a busy week! We had the Apex Fun Run Assembly, PJ Day, 8th-grade leader buddies and ending with a Halloween celebration! Thank you to all the parents who sent in items or volunteered their time at our class party.  You all are the best! A special thank you to our Dynamic Duo Mrs. Cary and Mrs. Diercks! They put together an amazing craft, snacks, and games for Team Urban. Our 8th-grade leader buddies were engaged and had a fantastic time with our 3rd graders.  For the first time, an 8th grade leader buddy told me to tell his little 3rd grade buddy "hello." It was impressive!

As report card season approaches, please keep in mind that ILCS assesses on end of the year mastery. This means that we are working towards mastery by the end of third grade. Many kiddos will not meet end of the year mastery in the first trimester and could very well be a 2 in areas, as they work towards that end of year mastery of a 3. Keep in mind when looking at assessment logs, the % score is composed of several standards assessed in that test to come up with a total score. For example, a Reading Test is made up of several reading, writing, or language standards.  Within those standards being assessed, there can be a standard or so that a student is not showing mastery even though 80% is achieved.

A recent reading test pictured above shows five students and their final scores to the left. The fraction listed under each common core standard show the correct answers over the total number of problems of that standard in the test. As you can see, most have a standard they have yet to show mastery on in some standards.  This is just one snapshot of what I am looking at over multiple assessments for the trimester.

AR for the 2nd trimester begins on Monday.  Goals are set based on the reading time each day and their most recent STAR reading test score.  I will go over new goals at parent conferences in November.

This week:
