Week of Sept. 19th

Greetings Families,

We had another productive week in 3rd grade.  They had a great week of review and working in groups to retell significant events of a story, identify character motivations, setting and theme.  Here are some pics of their groups from an activity this past week.

Students also took their first Unit 1 Assessment in ELA and had a Math Topic 2 test.  Please checkout your kiddo's math assessment scores through their Pearson account. We practiced how to show you their scores and explain the assignments to you. We are asking that you take a quick moment to look at their scores so you are up to date with their progress thus far. You will notice 2 scores for each topic test.  That is because the 1st time they take a topic test, it is a pretest and not counted in their grade.  The second topic test, evident by date, is the final score of that topic.  Every time they take the pretest of a topic, it will push specific assignments to them to complete.  If you would like your child to get extra practice on concepts not yet mastered, feel free to have them complete these assignments for an extension on the topic. They can do these assignments at home as a homework extension and are specific to your kiddo.  To find these lessons: click under classes, click on 'not started' tab, look for additional practice for online topic assessment (or additional practice for ______ whatever the assignment was), and then you should see multiple visual learning assignments, reteaching assignments and worksheets for your child to complete at your discretion. These are not mandatory but can be helpful with extra support.

Additionally, we will be going on a field trip on October 28th to the Escondido Animal Park (Safari Zoo). We are encouraging parents to drive because we will only be taking one bus. We are also encouraging everyone to donate to Dollar-a-Day as this helps provide for our field trip expenses.

Our focus this week will be:
  1. Begin reading The Moon Seems to Change and Treasure in the Trees. We will focus on how different authors use facts and details to support main ideas. We will also look at a text to see how illustrations and text features convey main idea and details.
  2. Spelling: ee, ea, ai, oa, ay, oa, ow and compound words
  3. Conventions: nouns as subjects and subject-verb agreement
  4. Writing: informative/explanatory
Math
  1. Distributive and associative property
  2. 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 as a factor
  3. We also continue our Fact Master multiplication tests.  Students will practice in class each day on their level and then take a one minute timed test.  Students will bring home a blank copy to practice nightly. It is imperative students study these at home for successful mastery of their multiplication facts.
Homework recap (nightly/weekly):
Due every day:  -Reading 15 minutes (put on reading log)
          -Daily Fact Practice paper
-Unfinished work from the previous day

Due on Friday:  -Writing submitted through Moby Max
                                 -Spelling work

Writing Homework:
A "How-To” essay is simply essay that tells people how to do something, but are reading directions as easy as writing them? Keep these things in mind:
 1. Pick an interesting topic
 2. Write a clear introduction
 3. Give steps in specific and logical order (first, next, and so on)
 4. Be specific
 5. Test it out (the best way to see if your essay works is to have someone else follow the directions you wrote).

Writing Prompt

Think of something you do every day. Tie your shoe, brush your teeth, make your bed. Pick one, or think of your own, and write a short “How-To” essay that tells someone step-by-step how to do it. Have fun and don't forget to have someone try it out.
